A seven-year-old boy was treated at the ENT Department at Fortis Hospital Mohali, where he received Cochlear Implantation last month. Despite wearing an appropriate hearing aid for the last two years, the boy was diagnosed with speech and language difficulties. Thanks to the procedure, the boy was able to hear and understand sounds better. Dr. Ashok Gupta, Director of the ENT Department at Fortis Hospital Mohali, performed the Cochlear Implantation.
Hearing loss can be caused by damage to the cells of the cochlea, the inner ear structure involved in hearing. Cochlear implants are the only hearing restoration technology in the world that improves hearing and speech understanding.
Despite visiting several hospitals across the country, the Patient’s hearing problem was not resolved. He was finally treated at Fortis Mohali, where his condition was diagnosed as damaged sensory hair cells (Fortis). A team of doctors led by Dr Gupta operated on the Patient, removing damaged cells and inserting the cochlear implant (a cochlear implant is an electronic device that improves hearing. It is placed inside the cochlea and connected to a device outside. It stimulates the auditory nerve and assists the Patient in perceiving sound and speech.
Dr. Gupta emphasised that cochlear implants are a boon for those struggling with hearing. Hearing is improved through the implant, which takes away psychological and social pressure. ‘Excellent outcomes are achieved in restoring a person’s sense of hearing,’ he said.
