Over the years, the startup ecosystem in India has evolved to become one of the cornerstones of India’s economic and innovative growth. In this backdrop, the Startup India Innovation Week 2025 from 10-18 January organized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, bears testimony to the vibrancy and resilience of this ecosystem.
As Chairman of CII Punjab State and Chief of Strategic Marketing, Trident Ltd, Abhishek Gupta shares, “Startups can revolutionize traditional sectors, generate jobs and innovation — and Punjab, with its enterprising spirit; a strong agriculture base; solid industrial setup; and the youth population is perfectly poised to reap rich dividends with the startup revolution.
The startup ecosystem in the Northern Region is flourishing and the growth of this ecosystem the direct result of joint efforts of the government, industries and academia. This progress indicates the need for same such programmes like Startup India which ensures a culture of innovation and provides financial assistance and less regulatory compliances.
January 16, 2025 marks 9 successful years of Startup India. This expansion reflects the nation’s vision to become an innovation hub worldwide, growing from merely 400 startups in 2016 to booming over 1,70,000 recognized startups in the country to date. The Startup India initiative dovetails perfectly with Viksit Bharat @ 2047, the Honourable Prime Minister’s clarion call to build a developed nation in India by 2047.
From tech ware to social enterprises, startups are at the forefront of tackling societal and economic challenges. Their impactful contributions in improving regional competitiveness and developing sustainable economic opportunities are undeniable. As such, CII Punjab has done a commendable job in ensuring that entrepreneurship & innovations are well supported in the state through initiatives, such as: Startup Mentorship programmes, Startup Conclaves, collaborations with academic institutions, actively working with the state government to address policies that lessen the regulatory pain for Startups and create a conducive ecosystem.
However, these steps are not enough and have left a large potential on the table in Punjab’s entrepreneurial landscape. Mr. Gupta stressed that government, industry and academia need to work together, with a more enabling environment for startups. Mentorship programs, easier funding access, and better skill development are some of the focus areas.
