-Chandigarh, November 6, 2024: The 10th edition of the Sardar Bhagwant Singh Memorial Basketball Trophy kicked off on Wednesday at the Indoor Basketball Court, GMADA Sports Complex, Sector 78, Mohali. As many as 70 teams from the top schools across the Tricity, competing in multiple age categories are participating in the tournament which will be held from November 6 to 13, 2024.
The opening ceremony was marked by traditional lamp lighting, a Ganesh Vandana, and the national anthem, setting a spirited tone for the competition. Distinguished guests, Vikramjeet Singh Mamik, Administrator, Vivek High School, Mohali; Dr Amar Jyoti Chawla, Principal, Vivek High School , Mohali, the school’s HOD sports Vishal Sharma; the school’s Cultural Coordinator Jayata Chopra, and Head of the school’s Junior Wing Ms. Minakshi Madaan were present to encourage the young athletes. The inter school tournament is being organised by Vivek High School, Mohali.
The tournament kicked off with an exciting match between Delhi Public School, Mohali, and KV Ground School, Chandigarh, in the U-17 Boys category. KV Ground School emerged victorious with a commanding 48-16 win, and Swarit from the winning team was named the top scorer with 14 points.
In the U-17 Girls category, YPS Mohali triumphed over Saupin’s School, Chandigarh, winning 31-15. Both Nimar from YPS and Jasmira from Saupin’s, scored 10 points, but it was YPS that claimed the victory.
The U-14 Boys category saw Amity International School, Mohali, defeating Shivalik Public School, Mohali, with a dominant 27-4 scoreline. Bismeet from Amity was the star player, scoring 21 points. In another match in the same age group, KV Ground School, Chandigarh, crushed St. Joseph’s School, Chandigarh, with a 44-12 victory. Ayush from KV Ground School led his team with 18 points and was named the top scorer.
In the U-14 Girls category, YPS Mohali beat St. Soldier’s School, Panchkula, 19-10, with Avantika scoring 10 points. In another exciting match, KV High Ground School, Chandigarh, outclassed St. Soldier’s School, Panchkula, 44-12, with Seerat leading the charge with 16 points and earning the top scorer title.
The U-12 Girls match saw St. Anne’s School, Sector 32, Chandigarh, narrowly defeat Saupin’s School, Sector 32, Chandigarh, 8-2. Ryka from St. Anne’s scored 6 points, becoming the top scorer.
Vikramjeet Singh Mamik, Administrator of Vivek High School, spoke about the tournament’s growth: “This year’s event includes three age categories—U-12, U-14, and U-17—for boys and girls, providing opportunities for athletes at all levels to compete. In a landmark move, we’ve introduced cash prizes for the top three teams in each category, with a total prize pool of Rs 2,70,000, making it one of the most rewarding school-level sports events in the region.”
